Understanding the Morepork (Ruru)
Before you venture out with your camera, it's important to learn about the Morepork's behaviour. These owls are nocturnal and are most active at twilight, throughout the night, sometimes even early mornings, often perched on tree branches or nestled in dense punga fern foliage.
They are typically solitary and elusive, making them somewhat challenging to photograph. But with patience and the right approach, you can capture stunning images that showcase their unique beauty.
Essential Gear: Long Lens & Low-Light Setup
A long lens (such as a 400mm, 600mm prime or any zoom lens 100-500mm or 150-600mm) is crucial for photographing Morepork(Ruru). These owls are often perched high in trees or concealed in thick foliage, so you’ll need a telephoto lens to capture close-up shots without disturbing them. This allows you to get beautiful detail in the feathers, eyes, and distinctive facial features from a distance.
Because you’ll be shooting in low-light conditions, a camera that performs well in dim environments is key. If you have a camera with a full-frame sensor, it will perform better in low light. Additionally, a fast lens (with an aperture of f/2.8 or f/4) will help you gather more light, essential for sharp images in very challenging light.
It is essential to use a tripod to steady your camera during longer exposures. This will reduce camera shake and help prevent blurry photos.
Most of my photos are taken around 1/30th to 1/60th sec sometimes as low as 1/8th.
Focus on Eyes and Expression
One of the most striking aspects of any owl, including the Morepork(Ruru), is its large, expressive eyes. When photographing these creatures, make sure to focus on their eyes to create an emotional connection with the viewer. Sharp, clear eyes can make or break a wildlife photo, adding intensity and depth to your image.
Owls tend to have excellent vision, and they’ll often be watching their surroundings carefully. Capturing this moment of focused attention can add an element of storytelling to your photos. Focus your camera on the Morepork(Ruru) eyes and ensure they are crisp and sharp.
Safety and Conservation: Leave No Trace
While capturing stunning photographs of wildlife, it's crucial to respect both the animal and its environment. The Morepork(Ruru) is a protected species in New Zealand so always maintain a safe distance, and refrain from using any techniques that could disturb its natural behaviour.
By minimising your presence and ensuring you don’t disrupt the Morepork's habitat, you can create stunning images without harming the bird or its environment. Being mindful of conservation efforts will help ensure that Moreporks can continue to thrive in New Zealand’s forests for generations to come.
